Woodrow Island Kitchen at The Willows, Silsden

<p>This three-storey home at <em>The Willows</em> in Silsden, nestled beside a peaceful canal, is a celebration of light, nature, and layered comfort. We sat down with our interior designer to explore the inspiration, styling and subtle details that bring <em><strong><a href="https://www.skiptonproperties.com/property/the-woodrow-the-willows/">The Woodrow</a></strong></em> to life.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bringing the Outside In</h3>
<p>Every design journey starts with a sense of place. For <em><em>The Woodrow</em></em>, it was the canal-side setting and the lifestyle it evokes that set the tone.</p>

<p>&#8220;Before I even consider colour palettes or furnishings, I dive into the setting. The canal, with its gentle wildlife and soft movement, instantly called for a light and calming interior. Everything needed to feel at peace &#8211; indoors and out.&#8221;</p>

<p>The resulting scheme leans into soft blues and greens, delicate textures, and subtle nods to nature &#8211; like bird-themed artwork and distressed wood finishes to echo the tranquillity of the water just beyond the windows.</p>

<p>Mya joined us in November 2023 and has been instrumental in shaping our marketing strategy ever since. From leading standout campaigns and crafting engaging content to driving forward our digital presence, Mya’s work has already made a real impact. Her promotion comes at a pivotal time as we prepare to launch a brand‑new website later this year, part of our ongoing commitment to enhance the experience of every customer, both online and on site.</p>

Finalist for Outstanding Housebuilder at the NFB Construction Awards

<p>The day offered a valuable opportunity to see emerging technologies in action, to hear from other builders navigating similar challenges, and to consider how elements of this work could inform our future design thinking here at Skipton Properties.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">On Site at Barton Quarter, Bolton</h3>



<p>Matt began the day at <strong>Bellway’s Barton Quarter</strong> development in Horwich, a site where over 450 homes are being built on a regenerated industrial site. The development also includes Bellway’s new <strong>Future Hub</strong> training facility. There, Matt took part in a guided walk-through of one of their “Future Homes” under construction, which included a range of technical features such as:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Air source heat pumps</li>



<li>Triple glazing</li>



<li>Enhanced insulation</li>



<li>Underfloor heating</li>



<li>Mechanical ventilation systems (MVHR/dMEV)</li>



<li>PV-ready roof structures</li>
</ul>



<p>The live site tour helped to demystify how these systems are being implemented in practice, not just on the drawing board and highlighted where practical considerations (like pipework placement or underfloor build-ups) require close collaboration between trades and designers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Testing Innovation at Energy House 2.0</h3>



<p>The second half of the day took place at the <strong>University of Salford’s Energy House 2.0</strong>, a climate-controlled research facility where homes are tested under a range of weather conditions. Matt was able to explore Bellway’s test home and hear about how its technologies are performing in simulated UK climates, from cold snaps to summer heatwaves.</p>



<p>It was particularly valuable to see how the building fabric and systems are coming together in practice, and to hear first-hand about what’s working well and what’s still being refined.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Taking a Balanced View on the Future</h3>



<p>The event, attended by over 30 small and medium-sized housebuilders &amp; suppliers, was framed around the <strong>Future Homes Standard</strong> &#8211; the government’s plan for reducing carbon emissions from new homes. While we fully support the industry’s direction of travel in improving building performance, it’s important to us that any changes are practical, cost-effective, and genuinely beneficial for our homeowners.</p>



<p>As Sarah Barraclough, our Managing Director, recently shared on <strong>BBC Radio 4</strong>, the balance between environmental ambition and real-world feasibility is something acutely important. Events like these give us the opportunity to observe what’s being trialled, ask critical questions, and think independently about what’s right for Verity &amp; Co Homes and our customers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Matt Brought Back</h3>



<p>Matt returned with a renewed appreciation for:</p>

<li>The importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration to deliver on emerging design standards</li>



<li>The impact that thoughtful detailing can have on layout efficiency and overall home performance</li>



<li>The potential for certain technologies, like air source heat pumps and mechanical ventilation, to play a role in future-proofing our homes, when applied thoughtfully and in the right context</li>



<li>The importance of how we explain new technologies to our customers to ensure they are used efficiently and optimise their performance  </li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><br />Looking Ahead</h3>



<p>We’ll continue to monitor developments in this space while staying true to our design-led ethos and commitment to quality. As ever, we believe that homes should be inviting and practical above all else, built to support families for generations to come, whilst also being responsive to the changing climates we experience.</p>



<p>This visit forms just one part of our wider approach to innovation: exploring ideas, listening to the industry, and ultimately crafting homes that are as considered as they are comfortable.</p>

Learning from the Industry: Matt Visits Future Homes Outreach Day






<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Designing with Intention</h3>



<p>Although the bones of the site were inherited, we approached it like every other Verity &amp; Co Homes community: with care, consideration, and curiosity. We looked at the layout and asked how the neighbourhood would <em>feel</em> to live in; how one home related to the next, how streets flowed, and where the eye was naturally drawn.</p>



<p>One of our first design decisions was <strong>the stone.</strong> The previous landowner was deeply invested in this development and wanted to leave a legacy. So did we. We chose a beautifully textured random stone that feels timeless, one that nestles effortlessly into the Pendle landscape and makes each home feel as though it’s always belonged.</p>

<p>We also carefully surveyed the views and made sure our homes responded to them, enhancing the outlook rather than interrupting it. We selected neutral, harmonious colours, tones that sit quietly and confidently beside the stone rather than compete with it.</p>



<p>The finishing touches matter too. Farm estate-style fencing ties the development back to its rural roots, and our landscape choices work with the topography rather than against it. At every stage, we asked: <em><strong>Does this enhance the experience of living here?</strong></em></p>

Pendle Farm: Where Craftsmanship Meets Community




<p>As proud trustees of <strong><a href="https://www.theprincipletrust.co.uk/">The Principle Trust</a></strong>, we’ve recently supported the <em>Big Skipton Quiz</em>, an event that raised vital funds to give disadvantaged children and families in Yorkshire the chance to enjoy life-changing respite breaks. But our involvement doesn’t stop there. Some of our office team will also be rolling up their sleeves to volunteer at the <strong>Settle Beer Festival</strong>, a brilliant community event hosted in aid of the Trust. It&#8217;s our way of giving back while connecting with the local community in a meaningful way.</p>





<p>Our management team will also be joining the Trust’s <strong>Farm Adventure Day</strong> for a unique team-building experience that champions our family values. It’s a chance to bond, reflect, and deepen our commitment to working together with purpose, a reminder that our internal culture is just as important as what we build on site.</p>



<p>Elsewhere, we’ve continued to support community sport through our sponsorship of <strong>Wharfedale Rugby Club</strong> and <strong>Fulledge Colts FC</strong>. These partnerships help fund kits, facilities and opportunities for young people to thrive through sport, offering more than just fitness, but friendship and self-confidence too.</p>



<p>We also proudly took part in <strong>Kicking for a Cause</strong>, a local charity football tournament that raised funds for the NHS and helped raise awareness around men’s mental health. Supporting initiatives like these speaks to our belief that well-being is central to strong, connected communities.</p>

<p>The government’s recent proposals to reform the planning system have sparked conversation across the industry. The reforms include plans to delegate decision-making on smaller housing developments to trained planning officers, rather than elected committees, and a £100 million loan fund to support SME developers. The aim? To cut red tape, reduce delays, and boost the number of homes being built across the country.</p>

<p>Sarah welcomed the government’s proposals with cautious optimism, calling the reforms “light at the end of a very dark and gloomy tunnel.” But she was also clear: words alone won’t change the reality on the ground.</p>

<p>She also spoke about a problem we’ve experienced many times before: delays caused by politically motivated decisions at committee level, which can override professional recommendations from trained planning officers. Sarah stressed that for these reforms to truly make a difference, they must come with real resource, especially more qualified officers to support the planning system and help it function as intended.</p>
