Our first three homeowners have got their keys, and for everyone involved in bringing this development to life, it’s a moment worth celebrating. There is something genuinely special about seeing the first completed homes no longer standing empty. Lights on. Driveways in use. A street scene beginning to form.
The landscaping has been laid, and it has instantly transformed the feel of the development. It brings the warmth of the stone elevations to life and softens the street scene, while the neutral window and door tones we selected sit beautifully against the black external lighting and detailing. Even on a grey Skipton morning, the homes feel grounded and confident. Built to belong.
The Oaks sits especially close to our hearts because Skipton is home. It’s where Sarah and I grew up, and where our family roots run deep. This year, Skipton was named the happiest place to live in Britain for the first time, topping Rightmove’s Happy at Home Index. For us, that makes building here feel even more meaningful. But wherever we build, our aim is always the same: to add something lasting to the places we work in, and to create homes that feel right for their setting.

Our customer reserved their new home over the Christmas period, with a rental tenancy due to expire shortly after. Without a smooth and timely completion, they were facing the very real possibility of having nowhere to go.

This way of decorating reflects a wider philosophy in how we design our homes. We believe the quality of a house should speak for itself. We don’t believe in overpowering schemes that distract from good architecture, natural materials, or thoughtful craftsmanship. Interiors should quietly enhance a space, allowing proportion, light, and detail to do the heavy lifting.

Despite widespread assumptions that the industry is “making crazy amounts of money,” Sarah reiterated the truth: SMEs like ours are feeling the strain, navigating rising costs, complex regulation, and decreasing support for both builders and buyers.
Her contribution offered a grounded, real-world perspective from a family-run SME committed to building quality homes with care, transparency, and long-term thinking.

Sarah Discusses the Autumn Budget on BBC Radio 5 Live

&#8220;It’s hard to believe how much the company has grown. But in some ways, through my daughters, I still feel as close to it now as I did when it began.
From the very beginning, I stood beside Brian as he poured everything into this business. It wasn’t just work for him,  it was something he lived and breathed. He cared deeply about the homes he built, the people who bought them, and the teams who made them possible.
I listened to every idea, every frustration, every big dream. We shared in the highs and the lows, and I always knew how much this company meant to him. It’s always felt like an extension of our family
Some of my favourite memories are the Saturdays we’d spend visiting our developments with Sarah and Caroline, muddy boots, site cabins, and a sense that something important was being built, not just in bricks and mortar, but in values and pride.

He also believed that the right kind of development could improve more than individual lives, it could breathe new life into a whole place. I remember how proud he felt when we turned something forgotten into somewhere families wanted to live again, and how that helped the school, the shop, the pub. He saw homebuilding as a way to strengthen communities, not just grow them.
I still knit the dishcloths that go into every home, a small gesture, but one that feels personal. Something made with care, by hand, like the homes themselves.
So to see the company take on a new name, Verity &amp; Co Homes, fills me with quiet pride. Not just because our family name is back on the door, but because of what it stands for. It’s a reflection of Brian’s legacy, yes, but also of everything Sarah, Caroline, and their team have built since.
It’s still a family business, but it’s grown in the best way. Thoughtfully. Honestly. With care.
I know Brian would be proud, not just of the name, but of <a href="https://www.verityandcohomes.com/our-purpose/our-family/">the people behind it. The “&amp; Co”</a> means something real. It’s for the team who believe in what they’re building, just as much as he once did.
This is more than a change. It’s a continuation. A promise that the things that mattered back then, care, quality, people, still matter now. And always will.&#8221;
